During the masterclass Parfum 1: History Repeats, we'll take you into the world of perfume, from the history of perfume to different distillation techniques and the well-known fragrance wheel. Grab your box of samples and join our Skins Experts on a sensory adventure.

1. A short introduction

Welcome, and thank you for joining this masterclass. Over the next hour, we will dive into the world of perfume together and let you experience five different fragrance families with fifteen samples. In the video to the right, we briefly explain the programme of this masterclass. Watch the video and then proceed to the next step.


2. History

How did perfume come into existence? Where find the word 'perfume' find its origin? And when was a fragrance first used? Our Skins Experts answer all these questions in the video above. Learn more about the origin of perfume and its essential role in our culture.


3. Distillation techniques

Now that we know more about how perfume originated let's discover precisely how the aroma is obtained. The different distillation techniques - from maceration to modern headspace technology - are covered in this video. We will also explain the difference between natural and synthetic ingredients.


4. Olfactory pyramid, fragrance wheel, perfume concentrations

How exactly is a fragrance built up? And what different scent families exist? In this video, you will learn what top, heart and base notes are, and we will tell you all about the number one tool in the perfume world: Michael Edwards' fragrance wheel. You can already check this one out below.


5. Tips & tricks

We are happy to give you some tips to help you get the most out of this masterclass. What is a blotter, and how do you use it? What’s the difference between eau de parfum and extrait de parfum? How can you layer perfumes to create your unique scent? We will gladly tell you in the video above.

7. Blind smelling: Floral

We introduced you to three perfumes from the first fragrance family. Which scent is your favourite? Grab the following three samples and explore further with our experts.

8. Blind smelling: Incense

What does the second fragrance family do to you? Is this something that makes you happy? Above all, try out your favourite perfume on the skin for a while using the cotton swab. We'll now move on to the fourth scent family.

9. Blind smelling: Leather

You have already been introduced to nine different perfumes from different scent families, and two more surprising scent families are waiting for you. Grab your blotters and the next samples and experience the next fragrance family from this masterclass.
