Everything you need to know about sun protection
You probably already knew that sun protection is vital to protect skin from the harmful effects of Uv rays. By including the right suncare products in your beauty routine, you can help defend your skin against premature skin ageing, sunburn and other collateral damage such as hyperpigmentation and a loss of volume. In this blog, we will teach you all about the different types of radiation and what to look out for when buying your sun protection. Our Skins Experts will also tell you about our brands, and the must-haves in suncare. This will help you enjoy your time in the sun and protected, moisturised and well-cared for skin this summer.

What is Uv radiation and why is it dangerous?
- UVA radiation - Handy tip to remember: the letter A in this word stands for ageing. This type of radiation works deep into our second layer of skin, where collagen and elastin are stored. Collagen and elastin provide the skin's elasticity, firmness and volume. So you can imagine that if you do not protect your skin adequately from UVA radiation, the skin may become more rigid, saggy or thin.
- UVB radiation - The letter B stands for burning. This type of radiation hits the skin more on the surface, causing a reaction. This can be that nice tanned complexion, but also damage, depending on your skin type and sun protection.
- Blue light - This has been an increasingly discussed topic in recent years. The biggest natural source of blue light is the sun. But by also frequently spending time behind the screens of our phones and laptops, this blue light can make premature skin ageing all the more so. This is because this radiation penetrates the skin even deeper than UVA.
- Infrared radiation - Infrared radiation gives off the heat you feel when you are in the sun. Here, our skin and clothing absorb the light. In the right dosage, this type of radiation can be very beneficial for us, think of an infrared sauna, for example. It can open the airways, stimulate circulation and give more energy. The result after an infrared sauna is often very soft skin and it also burns an impressive amount of calories. But with too frequent exposure, infrared radiation can break down collagen in the skin. As a result, you can already feel it coming: premature skin ageing.
What SPF do I need?
The abbreviation SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and this protective factor comes in different heights starting from 15. The factor represents the degree of protection against UV radiation. It is always an absolute must to apply good suncare, whatever your skin type or complexion. Our Skins Experts always recommend using at least a protective factor 30 for body and face, but preferably 50. Officially, an SPF only protects against UVB radiation, so it is important to use full spectrum suncare here too.

Why do you use an aftersun?
Our Skins Experts recommend always preferring an aftersun to a regular body lotion after sunbathing. Whereas a body lotion often only provides hydration, an aftersun provides relief for burnt skin after sun exposure. You can also use an aftersun to extend a tan in a very targeted way, so you can enjoy it even longer. An aftersun is often enriched with ingredients like Aloe Vera and coconut, which provide intensive hydration and skin repair. Skins Expert tip: put your aftersun in the fridge for a while before use for an extra refreshing effect. Your skin will thank you.
