Sustainable perfumes: a mindful fragrance experience
Sustainable perfumes: a conscious fragrance experience
At Skins, we’re seeing more and more perfume lovers consciously choosing sustainable perfumes. Organic, vegan or refillable perfumes demonstrate that sophistication and responsibility go hand in hand. Sustainability in the world of perfume is all about conscious choices – choices that show a brand is thinking not only about what goes into the product, but also about what remains after use.
These sustainable choices in perfume not only make a difference to the planet, but also enrich your personal fragrance experience.
How do you choose a sustainable perfume?
When choosing a sustainable perfume, it’s about more than just the scent: the origin of the ingredients, the packaging and the possibility of reusing the bottle also play a part. Natural perfumes, made from carefully selected ingredients, are a popular choice amongst conscious fragrance enthusiasts. Alcohol-free perfumes are also becoming increasingly popular, as they are gentler on the skin and better suited to a conscious lifestyle.
But how do you recognise these perfumes? When choosing, look out for certifications that demonstrate the ingredients have been sourced responsibly and that production takes place with respect for people and the environment. Another important aspect is reusability: more and more perfume houses are offering refills or reusable bottles, so you don’t have to buy new packaging every time — a small choice that results in less packaging waste. Sustainability claims about products are based on information provided by brands and, where possible, verified via Provenance.
The benefits of refillable perfume
Refillable perfume is one of the most accessible ways to make your perfume use more sustainable. Instead of buying a new bottle of perfume every time, you can simply top up your favourite fragrance. This not only extends the life of the bottle but also reduces the amount of packaging waste. Why throw away something that’s still so lovely? With our refillable bottles, you simply enjoy the same high-quality experience — the same weight in your hand, the same ritual — but without the waste. No unnecessary packaging, no new raw materials, just all the luxury. The most beautiful bottles deserve a second life. And a third.
More and more perfume houses — from established icons to new, young perfumers — are no longer designing their bottles as disposable items, but as objects to be cherished. The refill system is the logical next step in this: the same substantial bottle in your hand, the same morning ritual, but without the need for new raw materials every time to make that moment possible.
Our experts believe that perfume is more than just a scent – it is an expression of your mood, feelings and intentions.
Natural perfumes
Flowers, herbs and resins that are harvested with care contribute to healthy ecosystems and respect the biodiversity of the regions from which they originate. That is valuable. But origin alone does not tell the whole story. The cultivation of natural ingredients sometimes requires more land or water than carefully developed alternative formulations. Some of the most beloved ingredients in classic and modern fragrances are under increasing pressure, and the causes are as diverse as they are worrying. Rose absolute requires thousands of kilos of petals to produce a small amount of extract. Sandalwood is under pressure worldwide. In such cases, a synthetic alternative can reduce the environmental impact without compromising the fragrance.
At the same time, certified organic cultivation offers a tangible benefit: raw materials grown without synthetic pesticides protect the soil and the surrounding ecosystems. This makes a COSMOSS Organic or Ecocert-certified ingredient a demonstrably more conscientious choice in this respect.
The choice is therefore not simply ‘natural versus synthetic’. It is more nuanced than that — and we believe that a perfumer who embraces that nuance has the most to say.
Perfumers respond in different ways. Some invest in certified, sustainably managed plantations and can trace the origin of every kilo of raw materials. Others consciously opt for synthetic alternatives that ease the pressure on vulnerable species without compromising the fragrance.
The journey of your fragrance: from field to bottle
Behind every drop of perfume lies a world you rarely see. The vetiver in your fragrance may have grown on the Hauts Plateaux of Haiti, harvested by farmers whose families have been cultivating this crop for generations. The roses may have come from the Isparta Valley in Turkey, hand-picked at sunrise because the flower loses its scent as soon as the sun is too high in the sky. The oud resin may have been extracted from a tree in Laos that took decades to develop that specific layer of resin.
That distance – geographical, but also in terms of time and craftsmanship – is what gives a perfume its depth. But it is also what makes the supply chain complex. The further an ingredient travels, the harder it is to know under what conditions it was harvested, who was paid, and whether the land on which it grew will still be there tomorrow.
Concentration as a quiet, sustainable choice
The concentration of perfume oil is one of the most underestimated choices you can make as a perfume enthusiast:
An Eau de Toilette typically contains 5 to 10 per cent perfume oil. An Extrait de Parfum can contain up to 40 per cent. That difference may sound technical, but the practical consequence is simple: the higher the concentration, the fewer sprays you need to achieve the same effect. An Extrait de Parfum that lasts longer than two bottles of Eau de Toilette means less packaging, less transport and fewer raw materials — for the same fragrance experience.
It’s not a compromise. On the contrary — a high concentration also means that the fragrance develops differently on the skin: more slowly, more deeply, with more character in the dry-down. The conscious choice of an Extrait de Parfum is both the most refined and the most efficient. Find out more here about the difference between the various perfume concentrations.
