What is the point of aftersun?
After a day in the sun, your skin is often tight, warm or sensitive. Our Skins Experts explain why aftersun is more valuable than you might think - and how it supports your skin's natural recovery. In this Short Story, you'll discover the effect of aftersun, when it's needed and what alternative you can use.
What is aftersun?
Aftersun is a care product that you apply after sun exposure to soothe and moisturise your skin. Unlike a regular body lotion, aftersuns contain a higher percentage of water and caring ingredients such as aloe vera or calendula, which help soothe redness and reduce tightness. Our Skins Experts see aftersun as an essential product within your sun care, especially when your skin feels heated or dehydrated.
Is an aftersun really necessary?
Although an aftersun is not a medical product, we see it as a valuable addition to your routine. It helps restore your skin's natural barrier and prevents dehydration and flaking. Especially after an intense day in the sun, proper aftercare is important. Our favourites include Caudalie's Vinosun After-Sun Repairing Lotion, Rudolph Care' s Aftersun Soothing Sorbet with subtle shimmer, and COOLA Suncare 's Radical Recovery Lotion with caring botanicals.
How to use aftersun?
Apply aftersun as soon as your skin is clean and dry after sun exposure. Use a generous amount and gently massage it onto your body, paying extra attention to the most sun-exposed areas such as shoulders, décolleté and legs. Repeat in the hours after sunbathing if necessary, especially if you feel tight or burning. Keep your aftersun in the fridge for an extra cooling effect.
What is a good alternative to aftersun?
Do you prefer not to use a traditional aftersun? Then there are other products that have cooling, repairing and moisturising effects. TEAM DR JOSEPH's Golden Glow Body Oil is a good example: a rich oil that intensely cares for the skin after sunbathing and leaves a subtle glow . Products with antioxidants or moisturising extracts are also suitable, as long as they are mild and soothing for sun-exposed skin.
