Why your perfume smells different in every season

Perfume reacts to season, temperature and skin. In winter, your fragrance often lingers longer but is less intense, while in summer, top notes bloom faster. In this guide, our Skins Experts explain how perfume and the temperature of your skin work together and how you can choose a perfume to suit each season.

How temperature and skin change your perfume

Heat makes perfume evaporate faster. As a result, light, fresh top notes are often released immediately in summer, but they also disappear faster. In the cold, this process is slower, leaving deeper base notes such as wood and amber more present. So you often experience a warmer and fuller fragrance in winter, while the same perfume seems airier and fresher in summer. This also explains why perfume smells differently in warm weather than in winter. Your skin also plays a role: dry skin holds less fragrance than hydrated skin, and in warm places like wrist veins or behind the ears, perfume develops more strongly.

In colder months, an Extrait de Parfum or a perfume with a higher concentration is often a better choice. These formulas contain more fragrance concentrate and less alcohol, so the scent penetrates deeper into the skin and dissipates less quickly. The result: a perfume that lasts longer and develops more richly, even at lower temperatures.

How to choose a perfume for each season?

Start with your mood, environment and fragrance families. In summer, light, fresh perfumes or airy floral perfumes come into their own beautifully. In winter, woody perfumes or amber tones provide warmth and depth. If you like variety, it is inspiring to put together a fragrance wardrobe - that way you will discover a ambery perfume for every season.

Winter versus summer: what's the difference?

In cold months, woody and amber fragrance notes come into their own nicely because they give warmth and depth. In summer, fragrances evaporate faster and fresh citrus or floral accords often feel lighter and more pleasant.

So you can play with intensity and concentration seasonally, and find a fragrance that perfectly suits the moment each time.

Make your fragrance last longer: smart use per season

In winter, it is best to apply perfume on pulse points under your clothes and choose Extrait de Parfum for more depth. In warm weather, lightly mist perfume on well-hydrated skin and reapply as needed. This keeps your fragrance in balance, whatever the season.
