The sculpture is modelled on the monumental work by François Girardon (1699) that once stood in the Place Vendôme. In 1792, it was toppled during the French Revolution. Today, the original is housed in the Musée du Louvre. The figure is regarded as the royal ambassador of L’Art à la Française.
