It is an idealised portrait of the queen, not a depiction of a monarch at the height of her power. Her head is turned slightly to the right, her shoulders are draped in fabric that falls in folds to create a natural effect, and she wears a crown adorned with a fleur-de-lis and a row of pearls. As one of the most famous and controversial women in French history, Marie-Antoinette was the subject of countless artistic representations. Many valuable pieces disappeared during the French Revolution; fortunately, a few examples have stood the test of time.
